A couple of things I would do.
Drill a 2.5mm hole in the thermostat flange (if you have not done this already) as, without a jiggle valve, the near side pipe from the rad cannot bleed the air because the bleed nipple on the stat housing is above the stat.
As Si says, get the rear of the car as high as practicable so the air can travel towards the engine from the horizontal pipes under the car.
When bleeding the rad, remove completely the bung so as there is a good flow of coolant... if you just let it trickle out, the coolant can bypass air pockets without driving them out.
Between bleeds, fill slowly to allow air to pass through the stat hole, and also be able to back up to the reservoir.
Bleed cold.
Having done the above, run engine... let cool, check and top up level as necessary. you should only have to do this once. as the running engin will expel any air pockets up to the reservoir. :wink:

I have just bled the cooling system, no air is (or was) in it
* Coolant pipes go soft
* No bubbles in coolant and it doesn't smell of exhaust (although I do from standing at the back of the car and running the engine)
* Header tank is filled to the top of the pipe inside
* Car gets up to normal operating temp in the garage and the fans cycle

So.......I have ordered a new header tank cap.

I have not drilled any holes (too much of a faff removing the thermostat housing etc)

John, doesnt the standard thermostat have a jiggle valve in it ?

It should but many non OE listed do not .I found a few QH ones the other day that are the correct style .

Paul, the GTA` ones (88`) don`t, but the 610 ones (86`) do. I ordered a GTA one from Renault, but a 610 one (86`) arrived. When I checked with Renault it appears that they have rationlised the stats and now the 88` 610 one is sent with the GTA part No. on it. But wanting the correct 86` GTA one, I ordered one from Simon Autos, and down it came (86`) without the jiggle valve (it was also cheaper than from Renault). So I drilled a hole in it and carry it as a spare.
To be fair, the hole is only really necessary when totally refilling the cooling system having had the rad out etc...... or refilling with Type D coolant.

As a matter of interest, Simon Autos have both the GTA & 610 thermostats in stock.
GTA..... Pt No. 061028..... 22.02 Euros

Can I do that without draining the system? Do I need a gasket?

You will only lose a drop and no gasket as it has a rubber ring seal .It doesn't matter really though whether it has or hasn't as long as it's opening as it should .
Sounds like you have no air trapped and all good with pressure and temp ?
Are you losing any water that doesn't appear on the ground ??

Thats another thing I didnt realise, that it has a rubber seal in place of a gasket.

Not like my old Ford which was a pain in the ar%e to seal when changing the thermostat.

Yep strangely they seem to seal quite well - which makes a change on the PRV!
I'm just here for the gasoline.

I am not losing coolant.

I reckon its a faulty cap.
