I'm back from the garage and so far it doesn't look too bad. It turns over and starts on the button, no odd noises and no visible signs of "mayo". We only ran the car briefly with minimal fluid levels, so I'm not saying there's no major damage yet.

The oil was very low, so a bit was topped up and we didn't see any come out. The coolant was non-exisitant but this just pisses out of the water pump - so safe to say the pumps dead.

Next jobs are going to be to flush oil and coolant out of the car. Then run it with full levels and a working water pump and see if any comes out or any water mixes with oil.

A couple of questions:
Thermostat £5 - where from? my dealership quoted me about £30 and a bit more for a thermo switch.
What oil filter should I use and where should I get it from?

Thx
Chris

Buy your thermostat from the dealers, the original one was fit for 20 years of service.

Quick update:
I'm laid up with a bit of flu, but have just had a call from my mechanic. The new water pump is now fitted (thx Mr. Dell) and the thermostat has been ordered, it should be here on Monday.
However I do need one other part:
Guide bearing for the fan belt - does anyone have one or know where I can get one?
Its a 3" diameter bearing on a sort of triangular backplate with 3 holes in the corners ... The one on the car seems to be rather seized.

Apologies for asking for parts in here, but I seem unable to post in for sale/wanted. :?

My mechanic seems to think theres no real damage, but I'm not convinced yet. Its been turned over and run briefly ... it seems ok, so fingers crossed.

As Lee said, the old pulley was solid and the new pump is fitted, but I'm not going to try it until I've flushed the system.
At present the car is on a spare ramp at my bro-in-laws garage. I was ill for a week or so, so progress has been slow. Last Saturday morning I was trying to remove the front bumper so I can remove and flush the rad. Theres just 2 bolts left to get out, but they're rather awkward and rusted over. I'll prob dremel them out this weekend then flush the coolant, re-fill and hope for the best ...

When Richard gives his thoughts, 9 times out of 10 they are correct I'm afraid  It's a 10-1 shot though so there is a chance you have escaped cooked engine time

Before anyone asks I've still not started the car to test the engine and don't think I will be doing for a while.... My thoughts are that its 50/50 whether the engine is damaged. Don't worry though folks, whatever state its in it will run again!

Yesterday I went to the garage to remove the bumper and flush the rad, which I did.
After removing the bumper and getting a good look underneath the car it makes sense to do a few bits whilst the front is apart:
Clean and re-paint the front subframe.
I've got replacement springs/shocks to go on.
One brake caliper was seized, so both will be removed, stripped and cleaned.
Theres also a bit of fibreglassing that needs doing on the bumper/undertray.

This is where the car is taking up residence for now, at in my bro-in-laws garage, it will probably be there for a while... Unfortunately I only have Saturday mornings to work in the car and I don't really know what I'm doing, so progress will be slow ;)

Not a lot to add - I've been out of the garage for a while and tied up with house/family stuff, but I've been in the last couple of Saturday mornings and have done a couple of bit.

The front subframe has been de-rusted and covered in rust resistant paint.
Both calipers have been removed, cleaned and oiled.
The front springs and shocks have been changed.
The seized pulley and fan belt have been removed and replaced.

Next weekend I will be replacing fluids and finding out the state of the engine. I'm slow I know, but fingers crossed for next Saturday, I'm not giving up on this engine yet ;)
