A few more minutes with Google and it looks like gear failures in GM pop up headlights are common.
Fortunately there are a number of sites doing rebuild kits.

Here are some pictures of the motors being rebuilt- in fact the motor in the vice is the same (visually) as the ones in my 610.

Sounds like even if the worst happens and the motor is US, they can be repaired relatively cheaply.
The plug on the motor in the picture is the same as the 610 too. Looks like we have a match for all the winking 610 owners.

When I had this problem it was a bad connection in the block connector near the fuel filler cap. Check the continuity on each connector....

Possible problems are:

(i) Connectors, easy fix, clean and refit.

(ii) Motor failure. May just be brushes. Invariably when you try to seperate the top and bottom of the motor, for example to change the bushes, the nuts shear of. I ruined a perfectly good motor that way. If it does come apart it's an easy fix if you have a donor set. Otherwise relatively easy to replace the complete motor in situ.

(iii) Relay / control box failure. To the left of the ABS computer. Replace only.

Was on one of mine. Nothing left. Maybe a manufacturing fault as I couldn't understand how it could have worn so much and the other one be OK. I agree an armature fault should be more common and usually unfixable.

Thanks for the replies folks. I haven't had a chance to look at it yet to be honest, but at least I know some possibles. The light will now not go down either. I'll let you know what I find this weekend. If it was the gears wouldn't that stop the manual wind working as well?
