Maybe I will leave the small one disconnected and just use it if I really have to as a boost if needed...

Maybe if the locks were fixed, info above, then you could do as BIG MVS, and I do, that is, disconnect the battery with the quick release negative connection on the battery, when you are not going to use the car for a week or so Works for me

Yes that's probably the way to go. I used to do this before the lock went weird. I will have to investigate it via the info you have all sent.
