Heat or no heat, I think the photos posted by simontaylor should be proof enough. You can see the metal partical deposits on the outline of the bar magnets inside the the old oil filter, if that does'nt prove it to you, nothing will. However I will continue to use them, Why not try it for yourself, its only the cost of a drain plug, then make up your own mind.

Hi Everyone,
Seeing as I've had a glass of wine and the forum has been boringly respectable recently, I thought I'd join in...as this thread looks like it could deteriorate to abuse......

Magnets to catch crud IMHO are a good idea if you can add them in a way that cannot get anywhere harmful (I like Simon's idea..)
They pick up all the small worn off parts and as long as you don't hit the Curie temperature (see below from Wikipedia) they will continue to work at engine temperatures.
The best built car in our household (a Honda) has magnetic drain plugs for the gearbox and engine- and its amazing how much comes off each oil change- despite the engine being healthy.
Without the magnets these bits would land up in the oil filter or stay in circulation. Hey Lee- they might even have caught that bit you had circulating recently...

At great expence, all the way from America, .... at 3 bucks, I have also purchased a magnetic drain plug for the Lexus. In another 8,500 miles time I'll be able to show you all how effective it is and if it picks up my 13mm socket which I notice seems to have gone missing some where!

to be fair to clee, there were no tinkling noises right before his engine went pop...

there's now another adaptronic-run turbo PRV on the road. MOT'd on Weds, spent an hour or so letting the adapt do its stuff today with an Innovate lambda up its bum. Already going veeeery nicely.

Running a 2 bar GM from a '25t @ 1bar boost (properly calibrated). Not noticed the manifolds glowing, but I'm not running the "peterg6" map with ignition massively retarded :P Picks up and boosts from 2000rpm too.

For Info, calib figures for a stock GM 2-bar MAP sensor is 20kPa - ADC 210, 200kPa - ADC 3300

Then why did you run mine like that if you understand the basics ? I'm not getting into the whys and wherefores but I thought you knew what you were doing .Don't practice on other peoples cars .
I know the cause of my engine failure was down to me .That engine was originally built for another members car .I'm glad it never made it there .I sold it on the basis that I was a novice and that if it did go bang I would put it right .If it had I would not be dispensing my little pearls of wisdom online .

I've giving up listening to the ' Experts ' ( Apart from SS74 ,but then he don't say too much do he ?? )

Who would have believed the suggestion to replace a drain plug with a magnetic one would have produced 2 pages of comments.
