MOT failure..

Didnt want to hijack the Sprinting & Hillclimbing thread so just started this one

here are couple of pictures of the rear suspension mount which failed:

as you can see this has been repaired some time back but needs re-welding. It must be subject to harsh conditions due to the proximity with the exhaust pipe, which i suppose will need to come off for the repairs... any suggestion on what steps to take?

The rear calipers have been replaced by Andrew Turbodog but with original parts so i dont think there will be a lever difference . He talked me through resetting the handbrake so i will try this first.

That is bad .
Really needs the subframe dropping out and doing properly .The lower brace is crucial ...
Here's one I did earlier ....Well not me ,I have a top welder dude just round the corner :wink:

All is repairable .Have just had the lower turrets completely replaced on another project .Cut the lot away and put in new stainless fabrication .

that doesnt look like a quick and easy job...

is there a lot involved when dropping the subframe?

I was pleased with the result .
First pic is JIL .Had a quick repair job years ago but needed more attention for the abuse to come :roll: someday ...
You can't do these things half arsed .Found a good guy local which is a real plus and he doesn't pull yer pants down either :shock:

is it not possible to remove only the exhaust pipe?

what is the process of removing the subframe?

It's too far gone for that Cedric .
That was probably what happened last time and it has only served to make matters worse ,the original bits are still solid but the repair has rotted away .Hit it only where there was access and from about 50 yards by the look of it :(
The rot has extended to the dowel location on the subframe and also the support bar ...

Subframe drop is not that bad a job ,can talk you through it .Main issue will be getting the welding done correctly .Mobile guy needed if you plan on DIY .

Sub Frame

It is possible to remove the subframe the main problem are the 6 bolts which hold it to the chassis. Its usually the two bolts at the gear box end as they bolt into encapsulated nuts in the chassis. I know Clee has managed to get round this problem using a grinder, i think new plates and nuts were welded back into position to get over the problem.

I had my subframe welded with everything in situ how a certain young man got in there was a mystery to science, but it got me out of the mire. It was not a pretty repair only a temporary measure and it got me through 2 MOT's like that. It has since been repaired properly by said young man. I was putting off the enevitable but when the clutch went I had no choice. Having done it twice I would not be scared of doing it myself again and have learned a couple of clever tricks for getting the subframe back in and located quickly.

Is it not possible to have it all cleaned up plated as a temporary repair with engine subframe in situ to get it throuh and MOT and then take the car off the road during the winter when you have more time and money to do the job properly? I guess the real problem is whether there is actually enough decent metal to weld to and access to all areas that require welding.

I was lucky my subframe came out with not too much fuss it can be done and I can lend you items which work I know they work as I have done the job twice myself. If I can be of any help just ask away.

That looks really crusty. I would drop the subframe and get it done properly as discussed. If you bodge it you will be in the same situation 12 months down the line....

i have received my entry tickets too. i will be there in the megane. i have contacted gurston down and they dont have any issues with the change of car.

i havent done anything with the GTA yet... familly is over from FR at the mo
i have been trying to get the car transported to Clee to do the work but struggling to get reasonable transportation prices, its just a long way from bournemouth to nottingham...

cant drive it as there is no valid MOT so not roadworthy.

Book another mot near clee, drive it up, take it to Lee when it fails,
Or get someone with trade plates?
You have carried out some repairs first and are taking it there in case it fails......no rules to say the mot has to be near your home.
