Renault 5 turbo

Postby pgoldsmith » Thu Jan 07, 2010 8:52 pm

Can someone clarfiy something regarding R5 Turbos please ?

Whats the differeence between the Turbo 1 & Turbo 2 ?
And where all T1 & T2 mid engine'd ?

Plus, what's the proper terminology for the R5 Turbo that was not mid engine'd (i.e. in the front) ?

Finally, how fast did these little hot hatches go, I had one behind me at the Renault day at Silverstone spinning up his tyres at any opportunity !! Just wondered how they faired against a GTA Turbo.

RIGHT!: Very brief description........FOR THE ROAD GOING VERSIONS

You have the MK1 5 Gordini Turbo ( Or Alpine as they called it in the rest of Europe) which came in Late 1982, with a weird longitudinal positioned engine that was not rear wheel drive and suck through turbo and no intercooler. 110BHP

The Mid engined 5 came in 1982 developed for rallying and they used Mk1 5 modified body shells. It was know as Turbo 1, difference interior with waky dashboard seats. Doors, roof and boot lid alloy. Turbo 2 was launched because the waky interior and alloy panels too expensive to make. 160BHP

1984 onwards MK5 5 GT Turbo arrived, Transverse engine, faster and better handling than Gordini but made out of coca cola cans so not very durable.I guess it was a weight saving exercise. 120BHP

There you have it, of course all the above can be modified to achieve some serious power increase. For me, MK1 5 ALL THE WAY!!!

Not wanting to correct "the master" but, was the first mid engined turbo 5 ever officially known as the "turbo 1"? I am pretty sure it was only called "turbo" and the following car then became "turbo 2" We now refer to it as "Turbo 1" only to clarify which car we are talking about.

The GT turbo was based on a "super 5" while the Gordini/Alpine/Le car was a "5"

Had both when they were new and yes, the Gordini 5 was the car that got me out of bed at night just 'cos I couldnt sleep thinking about driving it. The GT turbo, although far quicker, never quite had that effect on me. Still waiting to sample a mid engined one..........unfinished business!

NAAAA more like "GTA Le Mans £6,495", then you will see how quickly he will get back to you.

Anyway Mr pgoldsmith as the above made things a bit clearer?

In a nutshell they are a whole lot more expensive and slower than the GTA.

Prices are starting to get close to A110 money

You have to love them though, cool cars 8)

which is why the standard 5 turbo 2 had a 0-60 time of less than a standard GTA turbo? :)
