10 inches of Charge Cooler

Postby simontaylor » Fri Jul 14, 2006 2:21 pm

I have just finished installing a 10 inch Charge cooler, without boasting, I think peterg may have the 8 inch version, so I'm hoping to get a bit more cooling over him.

I have just been for a test run and it is noticeably quicker, especially after the top end of 3rd. This is where the original sysyem is fully saturated with heat.

I installed a digital temp sensor on the output side of the Intercooler, as it flows through the hose to the V6 plenum.

On the original, this temp would be around 33-35 while idling, now it is 29-30. It used to stay the same while crawling along at 30mph, now it falls to about 27.

From a standing start at the bottom of a long hill, I can be on boost for a long time going up this hill, I would see 72 degrees by the time I hit the top end of 3rd and I think the IC is working well as the temp would not go any higher. It would take a couple of minutes of free running for the temp to slowly fall again to the thirties.

NOW, I cant get to see the temp rise more than the low forties, so I am 30 degrees better off. If it is .8hp per degree, I'm not loosing that 24bhp any more PLUS the ignition will not retard as soon or start to over fuel. The car is still pulling really hard all the way through 3rd and through 4th on boost all the time and still only 42/43 degrees.
What is more, withing about 3 seconds of free running the temperature is back down to the low thirties again.

I am so glad I used clear pipes as there were quite a few little bubbles to vent out, this took quite a while to complete.

Thanks again to David G for his help and support.
Off sprinting tomorrow, who cares if it is hot, I'll have a well cooled charge :D

PS: if anyone needs spares for any Mountfield mowers, I have all sorts available.

I understood (hoped) that size doesn't matter......

Good luck for tomorrow.

Size matters for sure. I calculated I have about 4.5 litres of water in the system, pumps moves 1/3 L per second, which means it takes about 13-14 seconds before the same water comes round again to the CC. So even before the water begins to absorb the heat, I have full power on tap for a good long while.

I thgink that the mapping wull make a big difference too.
Everything about a car is a compromise of function vs speed.

I was SO surprised how much better the car pulled at the top end of 3rd and on and on and on ..........

Lee.....engine mods are free as long as the block and head are original and it stays in the same capacity class.....so theoretically I could bore it out to 3 litres, do cams, twin turbos and still stay in the road car class as long as I dont change the suspension type, interior, silhouette of the car or the type of gearbox!
I cant wait to get the car back with the ECU done.....the guy has worked miracles...it could have been done (pending any glitches as yet unspotted) by tonight if I had asked for it. He had it wired in and running on Tuesday night (he started on it on Tuesday morning!!) and its now strapped to the RR for final set up (fingers crossed)....he spent some of yesterday and most of today doing another car because I told him there was no rush. Once I have it back I'll post a full run down of difficulties and readings on the ECU thread.
The CC does work very well.....should be good for making up some places at future sprints!
