A610 heater blower computer thingy?

Hi All,

Apparently there's such a thing as a heater control computer or similar... At least, according to the manual. Anyone know where it is? I've been having problems with my blower fan not working. I can hear relays clicking and things, but no blower. I might have blown said computer as part of my megasquirt thingy...

There is a small computer in the airflow in the heater system, on LHD its on the LHS of the heater unit at the end, on RHD, from memory, it's on the top, you undo some screws on the top of the heater and it lifts out. I guess checking for bad joints and poor connections are your best bet as replacements will be tricky.

According to the wiring diagram its on loom S3 if that helps. I have copies of the wiring diagram for 1992 which has a specific RHD car heater wiring page, but as I'm away right now, more information may have to wait until the end the of the week when I'm back home.

When I first purchased my A610, I too had no heater motor...

Wow! Thanks guys! That fills me with a bit more confidence that I can fix it.

I think I blew up my Megasquirt by moving an Earth while it was plugged in. Ooops.

Really quite upset by my stupidity. It was going so well - just preparing for the MOT.

Anyway, I'm happy to replace the transistors in the blower controller. Buuut... this looks like a direct replacement for the entire unit?

I just fixed what I had, as never expected to find an alternative...

Hi all,
I had an identical problem with my previous A610 some years ago and thanks to
the wunnerful Google I found a company that specialises in repairing such units.

As has been said on the unit is two flat battery shaped units called Darlington Devices that can eventually break
down. More modern cars have, I think Diodes that are much more efficient but can also break down
after many years of use. So I sent my unit off to this company. They were able to replace the
two Darlington Devices and also re solder a bit of circuit that looked dodgy.
The cost then was only £25.00 including return postage, a bargain.I refitted the unit and it worked just fine again. Very handy if your not into electronics and soldering!

Thanks! As it happens, I am into electronics and soldering and the like. I ordered a new unit -

But it turns out that the electrical connector isn't compatible - it has security cutouts that prevent a plug from a different car being plugged in. It's also too long! It fouls the heater fan inside the blower unit...

My old one is a complete mess:





I'm surprised it worked at all! I'm going to take the new one apart too in order to see what components it uses. I might be able to rescue the old with the new.

A quick update.

I found the eBay unit didn't fit the connector on my car - the security cutouts were different. So I took it apart and checked the circuit, which looked broadly similar to my old unit. Then I cut out the security cutouts so it physically fitted the connector.

Plugged it in. No joy.

I resoldered as much of mine as I could - it was difficult to get enough heat into some of the joints, even though I have a 60W soldering iron - may need to break out the big guns 120W iron

Anyway, that didn't work either.

Then as I was messing with things, the blower suddenly sprang into life! It turns out that there appears to be a faulty connection going in to the next "box" along on top of the blower. There's a plastic cover over it. I have no idea what's under there, but if I wobble the wires going into it I can make the blower start/stop working, all with my original transistor unit.

However, another problem has since emerged. The 8mm headed bolts that hold the plastic cover won't undo. Whatever's holding the captive nuts underneath is just turning. Argh! The rearward one is totally inaccessible as it's under the front scuttle. I feel like I'm being punished now!

I'm wondering if it's possible to undo without removing the blower unit. I don't want to as there's lots that has to come off and I'm not even sure if I can without degassing the AC. Double argh...
