Unmounting alternator on GTA V6 Turbo 1989

Postby smetsra » Thu Oct 06, 2016 11:10 am

Hello,

I am looking for advice on how to unmount the alternator on my car.
Not yet sure if a lot of different equipment is required and if it is difficult to get access to the alternator?
Can it be accessed only from the bottom of the car or from the top of the car?
I do have the repair manual, but not much too find on how to proceed.

Any feedback more than welcome,

Regards
Raf

Raf,

I've recently 'unmounted' an alternator and I would say it's not too bad a job.
You need access at the top to remove the main bolt and the pully plate, then access at the bottom to remove connector, cooling hose.

Whereabouts are you?

Paul

Hello Paul.

Thank U for reply.

I am based in Belgium.

Unfortunate i do not have a bridge to lift the car.

I wonder i can do it with jack?

Quite an easy job. You should have plenty of clearance even without a jack.

Hello All,

My objective is the following.

When the engine is started, the battery voltage is 18V iso 13,5 or 14V.

This makes me think that the voltage regulator is gone.

I wonder if I can remove the voltage regulator without unmounting the alternator.

Any advice welcome.

Raf

Yes it is possible but easier to change the regulator with the alternator off the car.

I had the same problem recently.

Hello All,

I am thinking to jack up the car to reach the alternator from the bottom of the car.

Like to get advice what are the good spots back of the car to first jack it up and then put jack stands.

You will have plenty of room when the car is up on stands.

Hello All,
The alternator has been replaced.
The +14V DC surcharge issue has been solved.
I required help, access was hell without proper gear, nor from top nor from bottom to replace the alternator.
A bridge was required to have proper access to the alternator.
But unfortunate i noticed today after driving the car that the speedometer does not move anymore, bummer.
Any direction to look at more than welcome?
Also I wonder if this might have impact on the Fuel Consumption Module Display, guess yes?
Also I noticed that the oil engine level indicator keeps pointing to the left when starting the engine.
Any advice more than welcome,
Regards
Raf
