A wise word regarding late night BBQ's

Postby si21 » Mon Mar 18, 2013 12:44 am

If your going to have a BBQ late on a Thursday say 12 pm at night make sure your 2kg powder fire extinguisher works as the results can be catastrophic :!:

Having spent two nights working on the brakes in my spacious well ventilated workshop the road outside my parents house in sub zero temps, (my parents neighbours think I am not all there and TBH, i am inclined to agree ). I finally got a proper feel to the brake pedal having replaced all the the fluid and re-bled brakes and clutch   happy days or nights as the case may be.

Well very tired I packed up and drove "Christine" home, unfortunately I forgot to switch the fuel pump on and I managed to get all the way to my destination and when parking it cut out, having emptied the float chamber on the carb. Finally realising my mistake tried to restart her, but she wasn't having any of it, starting to catch then dying and the battery starting to die. I needed to get her running without fail before the battery died altogether. I therefore conducted the drop of fuel down the carb routine .......only I put a bit too much in accidentally; realising what I had done, I left her without trying to start her. to my shock horror the rear of the engine bay burst into flames moments later with 2 feet of flames out of both carbs ...not good,! I waited a couple of seconds to see if the fuel burnt off and the flames die out......they didn't !!!

Thank God I carry a big a extinguisher, I rushed to get it the flames still about flames 2 foot in hight and I pull the pin point and squeeze and nothing   I struggled to put the flames out using my jacket as a fire blanket...only to realise that there were still small flames burning under the manifold in the V. Panicking I ran to the house some 300 meters away grabbed a large saucepan and filled it with water ....fortunately the flames all went out well after what seemed an eternity

After a while I went back with a lamp to inspect and was surprised how little damage there appeared to be considering the size of the flames and the length of time it was on fire. A vacuum hose and the throttle return springs and braket got fried but honestly I thought I was going back to a molten mess; especially after being on fire for about 5 -7 mins.

In the morning I went for a proper inspection in the light ....just out of interest I put the key in and turned her over....she started on the button even though the battery struggled a little

So typical of Christine  as per the norm one thing gets fixed and another goes wrong immediately afterwards

I now feel relieved as it could have been so much worse ...check your extinguisher works and if you don't have one get one; and one that works would be favourable. I think I have been very lucky.

Si21.....is there a Priest in the club as its just not funny any more :!:  :!:

Hi Simon

Most of us will find something on TV or watch a DVD to amuse ourselves at night, but you have to go all out to live life in the fast lane don’t you?

Glad to hear the damage was fairly small. I look forward to next instalment of “What Simon Did Next”; will you be selling the TV rights?

Many thanks Mr Dell - Emergency Service

Postby si21 » Sun Mar 24, 2013 5:38 pm

Well as per usual Something else dropped off "Christine" the performance silicon race leads. I now believe there had an issue with the plug leads, for a while; however, the recent engine fire finished them off and the the spark plug leads appeared to be leaking sparks and shorting the ignition out. The car standing on its nose violently at Goodwood last weekend below 3,000- in turn highlighted the fact that the brand newly fitted A610 (1 YR OLD) gearbox mount was failing as well. This made the car very difficult to drive the circuit in the very wet; not what you really need when starting to feed in the power from the apex on fast complex bend and the engine decides to stand on its nose and applies the brakes to the rear wheels!!.

I am very disappointed with the 610 mount, after-all only a lack lustre Atmo destroyed the mount in a year, I am particulary disappointed as this was supposed to be a heavy duty version of the GTA item  I was certainly not expecting to be replacing it already :(

Well any way one of the two issues have now been resolved, may be the 2nd one will also be very shortly. Mr Dell kindly ordered and received a set of 8.5mm competition KVR leads from Magnecor on Thursday, they are all nicely marked/numbered and fit perfectly from the length to the seal of the cap over the spark plugs; which can be a problem with other brands. I believe they come with a 10 yr warranty subject to miss-use and once fitted the tick-over became smooth the improved stronger power delivery.

Once again a big thanks to Mr Dell who ordered these Thursday through the club, arranged a very good discount. They arrived Friday afternoon and I picked the leads up Saturday morning and back on the road running better than ever in less than 30 mins.

I have heard people call the Atmo slow......I know I have 3 branch manifolds, but this one is not slow against the standard turbo. I now wonder how many Atmo's driven have actually been running as they should when new; I have persevered with " Christine" and I now realise without all the starting running issues etc I would never have realised or found these other latent issues having never driven another Atmo to know better.

Just goes to show you can blame a lumpy tick-over etc on poor old carbs ...but it wasn't, it was the high spec 10mm British made race leads; I have had a lumpy tick-over for a very long time. I look forward to seeing what difference it makes out on the track

I can finally say I have taken a few steps backwards, but in the end I am actually moving forward with her reaping the rewards of my efforts. The improvements made since Autumn last year have really improved performance that I did not know the car had.

Once again thank you for the excellent service and help from Mr Dell and Magnecor.

Si21

Many thanks Clee

Are the CGB motorsport items exactly the same have you used them previously?

I am kind off reluctant to make the weak points too strong I'd rather break a mount than a drive shaft it may also help with traction with a little give at £17.99 I don't mind replacing ...a bit different from a GTA Renault item at £85 probably plus VAT

Cheers Si

Your not going to break a driveshaft with a strong gearbox mount Si .I reckon you'd be more likely to do that when the box mount fails .....
I had a load of uprated Pearl mounts ,slightly different height but no fails as far as I know .I'd go for one of the new design or ....just remembered Scoff made some years ago and looks like he's done a new batch .Landrover mount I think with a custom plate .

It was under large loads; standing starts I was thinking of, at least if there is alittle compliance damping the shock to the shafts is what I was thinking Clee...its the same old thing you strengthen one point and the stress moves to the next weak point.

I have gone for a cheapy fix for now as I have spent money on unexpected problems and I still need to get a new 2 layer nomex suit. Still trying to make a sprint on the 14th April; well see eh! ill look into an uprated item as a standard one is not likely to last long so relability is important.

Cheers once again Clee

Gearbox Mount Issue Solved

Postby si21 » Sun Mar 31, 2013 3:25 pm

Right ordered a mount from CGB Motorsport its a 5 turbo HD version and I can confirm the rubber is definitely firmer than the 610 version already fitted.

The cause of the problem, some of you may know the car that I own was damaged at the rear and the gear box and engine got pushed forward on its mounts, bending some of the bolts to the gear linkage. What I had not realised until yesterday was that the bump stop that bolts to the front of the sub-frame was bent and not until I studied it from below I found that it was not doing its job and it must have been allowing the end of the box to move too far hence I have had 2 mount failures in 2 years. I never noticed there was a problem as it is difficult to see what was going on in situ (and the angle I was laying at); it was actually bent in such a way that it looked as though it was designed to be like that.

So going forward lets see what happens.:?:

Many thanks to Clee for his his help and advice on this one.

PS Clee you don't look 70
