Oh get over it Big M... how about doing something useful as a mod, and setting up a technical section with all of JohnC's posts nicely index? Eh.. bit of useful work for you lad, and given your IT skills all done in a jiffy I'm sure  chop chop...

I'd love to but my hands are relatively tied. I can only move, delete or edit posts.

Paul, now having seen the parts list and what the spring is doing, I would refit it in its original position as it will stop it possibly moving from side to side as the fuel sloshes around the tank. I have not actually seen it, but it looks as if it can be push fitted over the protrusion in the end cap in such a way that it is held there while you replace the sensor into the tank.... if it keeps falling off, from what I can see, you could possibly tighten the circle of the narrower part of the spring to "clip" onto the end cap.
With regard to it fouling the outlet of the tank.... it does look, from the parts list, a bit too big to really cause a problem.
Hope this helps.

Sounds good Nick 8)

The funny thing is that Jon Viola only got rid of the car because his fuel guage didn't work

Thank John.
When I reinstalled it I aimed the end of the sensor onto the spring - thinking it probably had something to do with locating it on the tank. So at the moment its sandwich between tank and sensor. Bit loathed to take it apart and try to recover said spring - for one I dont have a long pair of grabbers to retrieve it

That's why I always carry a straightened out wire coat hanger in the car for events such as these.... (bend a quick hook.) 8) ..... its amazing what you can do with them.
The other thing I carry is... what looks like a portable radio telescopic aerial but with a magnet in the end...... mind you if the spring is stainless steel, it won`t pick up..... then I resort to the coat hanger.

I also have both of those tools. Coat hanger is most useful!

Whilst we're on the subject- anykne got the wiring diagram for the earlier type of system without the black box?

Will need to check the continuity on mine at some point.

Thanks

Here you go Jon.

As you can see from the high lighted part of the cct, it is very simple compared to the later types, from what I have read on this forum about these, there is a spiral wire coming from the top of the sensor to the float which has a habit of snapping off at one end or the other, if this is the case, suggest sliding, say, 1 inch of heat shrink down the wire before soldering, having soldered, slide the heat shrink up over the joint and cable, apply heat gun or similar. This should strengthen the joint and make it less flexible so, hopefully, reducing the risk of it happening too often. I have not done this myself on an early sensor, but have used the same principal before.... and it has worked.

Thanks for that.

I know it's not the sensor as this is new so need to follow the loom into the car and check from there...

Err..... can I uncross my fingers yet? and what happens when you put fuel in the tank..... for instance, put in 10 litres, and the gauge should have gone up just over 2 gals.
