GTA turbo oil change questions

Postby Tom » Tue Jun 21, 2011 4:01 am

A few general questions re oil change in a GTA turbo.

1) The workshop manual says if you are trying to check oil consumption you need to turn the crankshaft so that no.1 piston is on tdc firing stroke before draining. What does this do and do you need to do this just for a ‘normal’ oil change?
2) Do you always need to remove dipstick and oil filler cap when draining?
3) Oil capacity including a filter change = 7.6 litres? (engine 7.1, filter 0.5)
4) I’ve read some owners of turbocharged vehicles like to put some oil in the new filter and crank the car over a few times (with no spark) to circulate some oil before startup. Is this necessary?
5) When full of oil should the level be between the two marks on the dipstick when hot or cold?

Cheers

Can't think why you need to set the TDC apart from the crank being in the same position ,I suppose so it displaces the same amount in the sump .
Never thought about the cap and stick as they tend to be out during the process anyway
Yes ,about 7.6l but go by the stick , just over halfway between the two notches is where you want to be .Do not overfill .
You only need to prime if it's been sitting for a long time or is a fresh build ,mainly to make sure you have good pressure up the top ,feed to the Turbo bearings .This has a one way valve anyway so there should always be some there .

Thanks Clee.

I have done the oil change, letting it drain thoroughly first and adding exactly 7.6 litres of oil with new filter. However, the level showing on the dipstick looks way too high. It's showing about half an inch past the top marker when cold. Is this right?
