I also hadn't appreciated that there's only one plug for the ipod or the steering wheel remote.

Prefer the steering wheel remote to work and plug the ipod into the front 3.5mm jack socket.

If it is an alpine D/D the angle is not a problem at all, the steering wheel controls are still avalible. If you are using an i pod get the proper i pod docking lead as it will give you full control on the head unit and charge the i pod.

Unfortunately not, they have just (literally) been discontinued and there is no more stock

I am successfully using an auto leads adapter with my alpine head unit, previously it was connected to a Kenwood. You might find this is still available or you can buy one on eBay.
Keep looking!

Pretty confident that I have a proper alpine lead on the way for the steering wheels remote ... though you've got me worried now!

However, the ipod docking lead looks like it has the same connection as the remote... we'll see if and when it arrives!

(Of course, I am some way off listening to anything!)

What model Alpine do you have? As the I pod interface lead should be different to the remote as that is just a jack plug and the i pod is a din plug end.

Ah! I have a Alpine CDE-W203Ri, though the connector leads haven't arrived in the post yet....

I just assumed the remote interface lead went into the multi pin socket. Now I see the jack plug socket... that's great. It should all work!

And if the now unavailable lead doesn't show I'll be in touch!
