Cheers for the advice chaps. I checked everything I could with no tools. Both relays were clicking next to the ECU and all the HT and coil leads were on securely, so I ended up calling out the AA. I told him I noticed there was no noise coming from the fuel pump when I turned on the ignition. So he began by checking that and it turned out to be a dodgy earth wire to the fuel pump. He wired a new one in for me and seems to be starting fine again. Dodgy earth - I should have known looking at my sig!

Btw I bridged those two pins on the diagnostic socket and the electronic warning light still doesn't come on with the ignition. I've never noticed whether it ever has.
