Just an idea - what do you think?

Postby Tony Smith » Sat Jan 03, 2009 5:10 pm

Alot of people have jumped on the idea of the budget car challenge off the back of the Top Gear shows. Various magazines have done similar over the last year or two - Practical Performance Car had a 1K challenge a few years back that proved very popular with readers. I thought maybe a car club challenge might be an idea worth pursuing. Strict budget on buying and modifying - good bit of inter-club rivalry, various challenges. Get a car mag on board to offer a decent prize for the winner. People in the club to chip in with expertise/hard graft/parts etc.

What do you think ??
Alpines - GTA 3.0 Turbo, GTA 3.0 Inj (Project DD), GTA 6.2 V8 (500 bhp) , R32 Skyline GTR, BMW Alpina B10 635 Highline, Alpina B10 E39 5 Series, Jaguar 4.2 XKR, Laguna 205GT, BMW 120d.

This idea was put about before wasn't it? Well I'd be well up for it this time!

If you want my 2 cents i think it should be affordable and have a mix of perfomance tests and a relaibility/long distance test, sort of pitting the tuners against the restorers!

I guess everyone would have a good suggestion but mine would be to recreate the Monte Carlo as it was back in the day. There is the obvious Alpine connection but the main reason being is top gear pissed me right off when they did it, driving that aston all the way on the bloody motorway. Bring on the Col de Turini at midnight in the middle of winter in a 20 quid Megane!

Now where did i put my wine glass

Slightly different

Postby Tony Smith » Sun Jan 04, 2009 11:31 am

Actually you've mis-construed my idea. I meant different car clubs i.e RAOC, RTOC, 21TOC, etc etc with each club pooling resources to have an interclub competition with 1 car each. With the credit crunch I don't think we'd have many takers on an individual basis. Cheap 5 Gordini turbo with intercooler conversion is probably the only Alpine we could make on a budget that would be competitive although a 21 turbo would probably be a better base.

3 cars - 12 people???

Postby Tony Smith » Tue Jan 06, 2009 4:46 pm

Sorry I don't understand  . 3 cars 12 people. How many car clubs are there in the UK - probably several thousand. If just a dozen fancied it would be a worthwhile story. Even if you kept it French theres us CAR,RTOC, R21TOC, Clio 16V club,19 16V, Peugeot 106,306,MI16 all have their own clubs (I bet there are over 100 owners clubs in the country for French performance cars) - do you see where I'm going now - 1 car from each club lots of different clubs.

I understand what you're saying Tony .I think it would work given a bit more time and sounding out the various clubs .Get the word out and work on a magazine to sponsor the event ...PFC being the obvious one ,they're under new management and have lost their way a bit with the non maxpower dudes of late ....

A plan for next year I feel ??
