Steering rack for A310

Postby turbo 5 » Thu Apr 05, 2007 2:45 pm

The A310 steering rack is an Alpine part number, but I must assume that the rack was from another vehicle and modified for the 310.

Does anyone know the source of the rack?

I need to change my rack for one that is 'faster', has anyone done simular? and how did you do it?

Thanks
Mark

What some A310 owners do in Australia

Postby covert » Sat Apr 07, 2007 11:40 am

Now I an not a total expert in this field but here are some information I have picked up over the years..

First A310 alpines used RHD Simca 180 Steering Racks for LHD cars, alpine turned the racks upside down... I found this out as I am having to convert my A310 from LHD to RHD and bought a Chrysler Centura RHD Rack and it was the same as the LHD rack from the A310...

http://www.allpar.com/model/simca.html
http://www.rootes-chrysler.co.uk/car-de ... v-180.html

I was then told you have to get a LHD Simca Rack to make it RHD... which I have yet to find, alot of the early A310 conversions in australia were done with LHD simca racks as you could still order them from Chrysler

Recent conversion here have been done with RHD Ford Cortina TD racks as they are similar... I wondered in Escort quick racks or a Ford Cortina quick rack was ever sold in the UK... put I have no idea there either

I hope this helps... it's limited knowledge I know, but maybe some of the UK or Euro dudes can shed some more light on simca 180 LHD spare parts places etc...

Quick racks for Escorts are easily available (even in AUS)quite cheaply, but whether it will fit in an A310 someone else will have to try it out.
